Through interlibrary borrowing, the Library can obtain unusual publications which it does not possess for the use of graduate students. Through the exchange of catalogue cards and the frequent delevery service, the resources of the Duke University Library are readily available, as are those of of North Carolina State University at Raleigh and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Of particular value to Operations Research students is the Alfred
Brauer Library of Physics and the Mathematical Sciences which is located
in Phillips Hall, across from Operations Research offices. It consists
of approximately 84,000 volumes, microfiche, technical reports and over
950 current journal subscriptions.
Academic Technology & Networks
(ATN) provides the UNC community with a diverse array of research and instructional
computing resources along with a pan-University infrastructure, which includes
fiber optic backbone network access to resources, technical assistance,
training for services and applications, and hardware and software site
licenses. ATN enables desktop computers and workstations to interact with
their Unix-based compute servers (including a Silicon Graphics Origin 2000
and a Sun Enterprise 600 workstation) for purposes such as personal and
shared filespaces, printing, authentication, and scientific and statistical
computing. In addition to campus-based resources, ATN provides access to
remote resources such as supercomputing facilities (including the North
Carolina Supercomputer Center in the Research Triangle Park) and online
databases along with discovery, evaluation, and education services to assist
the UNC community in locating and using these resources. ATN also maintains
the popular Metalab
(formerly SunSITE) information
resource on the World Wide Web.
The Department of Operations Research has a network of Sun Sparc and
UltraSparc unix workstations which can be accessed by students for instructional
or research purposes. These include a dual-processor Ultra 2, an Ultra
1, a Sparc 10, and two Sparc 5 workstations. A computing laboratory is
located within the Operations Research Department in 206/207 Smith Building
to provide services exclusively to its graduate students. The laboratory
contains an assortment of workstations, IBM-compatible computers with pentium
processors and an HP4M+ laser printer, all of which are fully integrated
into the departmental and university network. IBM PS/2s are also available
in student offices.
The intellectual life of the University and the research activities
of graduate students and faculty alike receive valuable encouragement and
support from various institutes. These institutes do not operate as instructional
agencies within the University; rather, they provide focal points for mission-oriented
research.
Institues located on campus include the Institute of Marine Sciences, Institute for Environmental Studies, The University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center, The Carolina Population Center, The Sheps Center for Health Services Research and the Center for Urban and Regional Studies.
